Todd McGowan is a Professor and Director of Film and Television Studies at the University of Vermont's Department of English (College of Arts and Sciences). He holds a Ph.D. from Ohio State University (1996). His work bridges philosophy and media studies, focusing on how theoretical concepts from Hegel, Marx, Freud, and others intersect with cinematic and televisual representation.
Key research interests include psychoanalytic film theory, existentialism in media, and the socio-psychological impacts of capitalism. He has authored books such as Only a Joke Can Save Us: A Theory of Comedy, Capitalism and Desire, and The Impossible David Lynch. His courses explore themes like 'Noir Marx,' 'Existentialism and the Teen Film,' and 'Psychoanalytic Truffaut.'
McGowan actively contributes to academic communities through editorial roles at American Imago, the Badiou Seminar Translation Project, and Psychoanalysis, Culture & Society. His theoretical work challenges traditional spectator-film relationships, emphasizing desire over identification.
