Todd Donovan is a Professor of Political Science at Western Washington University, where he teaches courses on parties, elections, and state politics. He holds a non-partisan role as a local elected official and is known for his research on political behavior, electoral systems, and direct democracy. Donovan has conducted public opinion surveys in the US, UK, and other countries, with a focus on voter turnout, representation, and the impacts of electoral reforms like ranked-choice voting.
His research interests span representation and electoral systems, political behavior, public opinion, and American state politics. He has authored/co-authored over a dozen books (published by Oxford, Chicago, and Michigan presses) and numerous peer-reviewed articles. His work has influenced legal cases, including Supreme Court citations, and he advises media organizations on election matters globally.
Donovan has received the University's Olscamp Award for research excellence. His recent studies analyze radical right gender gaps, campaign civility under ranked-choice voting, and voter perceptions of tax increases. He advocates for electoral reforms to enhance democratic engagement and has served as an expert witness in election-related court cases.
He remains active in applied research, bridging academia with public policy through his roles in governance and media advisory. Beyond academia, he holds the title of defending champion of the Bellingham Pub Run, showcasing his community involvement.
