Todd Allen is a Professor in the Department of Psychological Sciences at the University of Northern Colorado (UNC), part of the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. in Neural Science and Psychology from Indiana University and a postdoctoral fellowship at Rutgers University’s Center for Molecular and Behavioral Neuroscience. His research focuses on testing a learning diathesis model of anxiety disorders, collaborating with the Stress and Motivated Behavior Institute (SMBI) and the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (VA). Key areas include personality influences on associative learning, behavioral inhibition, and their roles in PTSD and addiction vulnerability. He also explores applications of learning models to educational psychology, addressing academic anxiety like perfectionism and procrastination.
Dr. Allen teaches courses such as physiological psychology, learning, and brain and education at both undergraduate and graduate levels. His work combines animal and human studies, utilizing classical eyeblink conditioning and computer-based tasks. He is a Fellow of the International Stress and Behavior Society and has held leadership roles in UNC’s Faculty Senate, including Chair of the Academic Policies Committee and Elections Chair. He served as Interim Director of the School of Psychological Sciences in 2016–2017.
His research has been published in journals like Frontiers in Psychology, Behavioural Brain Research, and Frontiers in Neuroscience. Collaborations emphasize translational approaches linking basic science to clinical applications in stress, motivation, and behavioral disorders. His studies often integrate computational modeling to understand neural substrates of learning and stress responses.
Dr. Allen’s awards and recognitions highlight his contributions to understanding stress and behavior. His teaching spans classroom and online modalities, reflecting his commitment to innovative education in psychological sciences.
