Dr. Toby Davies is an Associate Professor in Criminal Justice Data Analytics at the University of Leeds' School of Law. His expertise spans crime science, urban analytics, spatial analysis, and network science, with a focus on computational methods and mathematical modeling. He holds a PhD in Mathematics from University College London (UCL) and a MMath from the University of Oxford. Previously, he served as a Lecturer and Associate Professor at UCL's Department of Security & Crime Science before joining Leeds in 2023.
His research integrates interdisciplinary approaches to study crime patterns, including urban form's impact on crime distribution, computational crime modeling (e.g., residential burglary and riots), and social network analysis. Collaborations with police forces (e.g., West Yorkshire Police) and agencies like the UK Home Office have led to operational tools for crime prevention. Davies is a proponent of Open Science, co-founding JDI Open at UCL to promote transparency in crime science.
Teaching focuses on quantitative methods in criminology at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. His work appears in journals such as Criminology, Chaos, and Applied Network Science, with contributions to edited books and conference sessions. He also guest-edited a special issue on network science applications.
Professional memberships include the European Society of Criminology. Current research explores financial crime (e.g., cryptocurrency fraud) and social contagion effects in crime-related behaviors.
