Tobias Robert Klein is a Professor of Historical Musicology at Humboldt University of Berlin, serving as an acting professor and private lecturer (Privatdozent) following his 2014 habilitation. His academic career includes research assistant positions at Magdeburg University and Giessen University (now Leibniz Center for Literature and Cultural Research).
He earned his doctorate from Magdeburg University in 2007 after studying musicology, African studies, and computer science at Humboldt University of Berlin.
Klein's research spans medieval to 20th-century music history with a distinctive global perspective, rejecting disciplinary boundaries between Western European and West African musical traditions. His core focus examines intersections of music and knowledge history, musical theater dramaturgy, and critical analysis of musicology's own methodology. Extensive archival work forms the foundation of his scholarship, as he actively traces foundational figures like Spitta, Abert, and Schering.
His 2022 critical edition of Carl Dahlhaus's letters exemplifies his commitment to preserving and contextualizing pivotal historical documents in musicology, reflecting both his editorial rigor and deep engagement with the field's intellectual lineage.
