Tobi Poster-Su is a Lecturer in Drama at Bath Spa University's Bath School of Music and Performing Arts, specializing in puppetry and cross-disciplinary performance. He serves as Module Leader for Theatre Project and teaches Building the Ensemble and Investigating Theatre and Performance.
His academic qualifications include:
- BA Acting from the University of Leeds
- PGCert in Higher Education from Bristol UWE
- MA in Education from Bristol UWE
Poster-Su's research interrogates race, racialisation, and material performance through critical puppetry, exploring boundaries between human/object and familiar/Other. His work employs autoethnographic methods to excavate marginalized historical narratives via cross-disciplinary theatre practices.
His 2020-2025 publications analyze racial construction in puppetry (e.g., Madam Butterfly, Chang and Eng), decolonisation in theatre, and academic conference politics. This body of work consistently bridges performance practice with critical race theory and postcolonial frameworks.
As Module Leader, he mentors undergraduate students in ensemble-based theatre. His AHRC-funded PhD at Queen Mary University of London examines racialisation in 21st-century puppetry.
Co-artistic Director of Wattle and Daub, he creates performances like Chang and Eng and Me (and Me) (2021). He also co-convener of TaPRA's Bodies and Performance working group and serves on Queen Mary's Quorum committee.
