Tjoson Tjoa, MD, is an Associate Professor and Interim Chair at the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery of the University of California, Irvine (UCI) School of Medicine. Board-certified in otolaryngology, he specializes in head and neck cancer, microvascular reconstruction, and thyroid surgery.
- Education: Medical degree from Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine; residency at UCI Medical Center; fellowship in Head and Neck Oncology and Microvascular Reconstruction at Harvard Medical School/Massachusetts Eye and Ear Hospital.
His research spans head and neck surgical outcomes, HPV-related cancer management, AI ethics in medicine, and regionalization of specialized tumor care. Recent work explores craniofacial trauma, robotic surgery, and racial disparities in adjuvant therapy.
- Scientific Awards: Recognized as Physicians of Excellence by the Orange County Medical Association (2023).
Dr. Tjoa serves on the Academy of Otolaryngology–Head & Neck Surgery Ethics Committee and has pioneered initiatives like the underrepresented in medicine grant for otolaryngology students. He also contributes as a peer reviewer for major otolaryngology journals.
