Tizazu Mekonnen is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Waterloo, and serves as Director of the IBET PhD Project. His research focuses on sustainable polymers, bio-based materials, and polymer composites, emphasizing environmental applications like biodegradable packaging and oil spill remediation. He holds a Canada Research Chair (Tier II) in Sustainable Multiphase Polymers.
Education: PhD in Bioresource Engineering (University of Alberta, 2013); MSc in Chemical Engineering (Addis Ababa University, 2009).
Research Interests: Bio-based polymers, polymer blends/composites, sustainable nanomaterials, and polymer modification. His work integrates chemical synthesis, rheology, and advanced characterization to enhance material sustainability and functionality.
As IBET Director, he leads initiatives to increase Indigenous and Black representation in engineering through mentorship and networking programs. Recent publications highlight innovations in recyclable polymers, self-healing materials, and nanostructured composites.
Teaching includes courses like CHE 102 (Chemistry for Engineers) and CHE 541 (Polymer Science). He actively supervises graduate students and holds Sole-Supervisory Privilege Status (SSPS).
Notable Awards: Prestigious early career award (2023) and recognition for advancing inclusion in engineering.
Labs/Teams: Research Group focuses on sustainable multiphase polymers, with collaborations in Canada and internationally.
