Tivadar Vida is a Professor at the Department of Early Medieval and Historical Archaeology within the Institute of Archaeological Sciences at Eötvös Loránd University (Budapest, Hungary). He serves as Director of the Institute and Head of the Department, positioning him as a central figure in Hungarian archaeology.
His research focuses on archaeogenetics, historical archaeology, and population genetics, particularly during the Migration Period and Early Middle Ages in Central Europe. He integrates ancient DNA analysis with interdisciplinary data to study trans-Eurasian connections, social organization, and cultural continuity in Pannonia.
Publications highlight themes like elite kinship networks (Avar period), genetic barriers despite shared material culture, and steppe migrations into Central Europe. His work often addresses transitions from Roman to post-Roman societies, emphasizing interdisciplinary methodologies combining genetics, archaeology, and historical records.
Key projects include the ERC Synergy Grant HistoGenes 856453 (2022), analyzing 400–900 AD Eastern Central Europe via genomic, archaeological, and historical perspectives. He also contributes to funerary archaeology and material culture studies, such as Byzantine amulets and Lombard-era ceramics.
Vida's leadership roles at ELTE and collaborations with institutions like the Research Centre for the Humanities (Hungarian Academy of Sciences) underscore his institutional influence. He maintains a professional website at http://regeszet.elte.hu/ and is contactable via vida.tivadar@btk.elte.hu.
