Tine Paulsen is an Assistant Professor at the University of Southern California’s Department of Political Science and International Relations, concurrently serving as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Zurich’s Department of Political Science. Her research bridges comparative politics and political economy, focusing on formal institutions' impacts on representation, economic policies, and citizen welfare. She employs statistical methods and archival research, particularly in Western Europe and North America.

Research interests include electoral institutions, state-building, democratization, and historical political economy. Her book project examines local electoral reforms in early 20th-century Scandinavia, analyzing how national politicians’ reforms shaped representation and redistribution. This work won APSA’s Ernst B. Haas Award. She co-organizes the Virtual Workshop in Historical Political Economy (VWHPE).
Publications explore topics like electoral systems’ effects on redistribution, bias reduction in academic grading, and historical links between schooling and democracy. Awards include recognition for her dissertation. She teaches courses like “Electoral Institutions in Europe and the World” and actively contributes to interdisciplinary research networks.
