Tina Pihl is an Associate Professor and Veterinarian (DVM) at the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, Section of Large Animal Medicine, Surgery and Reproduction at the University of Copenhagen's Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. With over 15 years of experience in both private practice and at the University Teaching Hospital for Large Animals in Copenhagen, she specializes in equine gastrointestinal diseases and ophthalmology.
Her educational background includes:
- DVM in Veterinary Medicine from the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University (1995-2002), focusing on Ultrasonography of the equine back
- PhD on Acute phase proteins in horses with acute abdominal pain (2008-2012)
Dr. Pihl's research primarily focuses on biomarkers of inflammation and hemostasis in blood and peritoneal fluid, particularly their use as diagnostic and prognostic markers in horses with acute abdominal pain. Her work spans equine colic, Strongylus vulgaris infections, intestinal infarctions, and acute diarrhea cases. She has published extensively on molecular markers including microRNAs and acute phase proteins for diagnosing and predicting outcomes in equine gastrointestinal diseases.
Her recent publications demonstrate strong emphasis on translational research connecting molecular diagnostics with clinical outcomes in equine medicine. The work spans parasite biology, diagnostic biomarker discovery, and clinical management of gastrointestinal emergencies in horses.
As an educator, Dr. Pihl teaches veterinary students in large animal internal medicine through lectures and clinical rotations at the hospital. She also participates in daily and emergency clinical work at the Large Animal Hospital. Her activities include numerous lectures, conference participations, and workshop engagements focused on equine infectious diseases and colic management.
Dr. Pihl has been actively involved in several research collaborations, including the Multicenter Equine Diarrhea (MEDS) group, and has contributed to international parasite control guidelines. Her work has received media attention in both Danish and international outlets regarding equine parasite control and diagnostic approaches for colic.
