Tina Grotzer is an Associate Professor of Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE) and a Principal Research Scientist at Harvard University. She is a leading cognitive and learning scientist specializing in causal cognition, complexity, and sustainability education. Her work focuses on how learners develop expertise in reasoning about complex systems, particularly in the context of climate change and ecosystems science. She leads the Cognition in a Complex World Lab, the Next Level Lab (NLL), and the EcoLEARN team, which develop immersive virtual environments and curricula to enhance ecological and systems thinking.
Her research emphasizes the importance of shifting mindsets toward long-term, global perspectives and has produced frameworks such as Earth Resonant Design Moves. She has been awarded prestigious honors, including the NSF Career Award and the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. Grotzer teaches courses on expert learning, instructional design, and climate education, and her work bridges theory and practice through collaborations with educators and institutions.
Grotzer’s contributions span over a decade of publications on causal reasoning, complex systems education, and the design of technology-mediated learning environments. Her projects, such as EcoMUVE and EcoXPT, integrate virtual worlds and augmented reality to foster deeper understanding of ecological dynamics. She also advocates for inclusive climate education and preparing learners for future challenges in a VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous) world.
