Timothy Snyder is a Professor and Chair in Modern European History at the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy, University of Toronto. He holds the Temerty Endowment for Ukrainian Studies and directs the Public History Lab. He is a permanent fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna and heads the academic advisory council of the Ukrainian History Global Initiative.

As a scholar of Central Europe, Ukraine, the Soviet Union, and the Holocaust, Snyder's work spans historical analysis and contemporary political philosophy. He emphasizes the interplay between authoritarianism, state destruction, and ecological crises, with recent books like On Freedom and Our Malady linking historical insights to modern challenges in governance and healthcare.
His work has received international recognition, including the Emerson Prize, Hannah Arendt Prize, and honorary doctorates. He contributes regularly to the New York Review of Books and has appeared in documentaries, on television, and as an expert witness before parliaments.
With expertise in five spoken and ten read European languages, Snyder's scholarship bridges academic rigor and public engagement, influencing art, music, and theater. His current affiliations include senior fellow positions at the Council on Foreign Relations and the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna.
