Timothy Scheie is a Professor of French in the Humanities Department at the Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester. He has held this position since 1994, serving as department chair from 2005-2011 and again in 2021. His roles include Fulbright Program Advisor and Director of Foreign Language Instruction. Scheie’s research focuses on performance studies, French and American theater, and intersections between film genres and national cinema. He has authored two monographs: Performance Degree Zero: Roland Barthes and Theatre (2006) and French Westerns: On the Frontier of Film Genre and National Cinema (2024).
Educational background includes a BA in French from Saint Olaf College (Phi Beta Kappa), and MA/PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He conducted additional studies in Paris, Avignon, and Perugia, and held postdoctoral fellowships at Northwestern University (1995) and Princeton University (2002). His teaching spans French cinema, avant-garde theater, and opera repertoire courses.
Research interests emphasize French cinema’s genre dynamics, Barthes’ semiotics, and decolonial theater. Scheie is an advocate for modern language education, serving on the MLA Steering Committee (2012) and as president of the Association of Departments of Foreign Language (ADFL, 2013). He founded ADFL’s consultancy service, aiding over 100 institutions. Recent NEH-funded residencies and international conference presentations underscore his scholarly impact.
His work integrates academic and artistic spheres, blending film, theater, and cultural studies. Current projects include exploring French Westerns’ cultural frontiers and advising on global language education strategies.
