Dr. Timothy "Tip" A. Meckel is a Research Professor at the Bureau of Economic Geology, The University of Texas at Austin. Over 18 years, he has led geologic carbon storage research, focusing on structural geology, seismic monitoring, and CO2 injection dynamics.
- Ph.D. in Geology and Geophysics (2003), University of Texas at Austin
- M.S. in Geology (1998), University of Montana
- B.A. in Geology (1995), Colby College
His research integrates structural and stratigraphic analysis to understand CO2 behavior in subsurface environments. Key areas include:
- Geologic characterization for storage sites
- High-resolution 3D marine seismic acquisition
- Pressure evolution modeling
- Capacity assessment for offshore CCS
- Fluid migration dynamics
- Field data integration for simulation validation
Recent publications emphasize offshore CCS potential, small-scale heterogeneity impacts on trapping, and seismic monitoring innovations. His work spans the Gulf of Mexico, Hokkaido, and Norwegian North Sea, with a focus on practical deployment and policy integration.
Scientific awards include:
- 2018 Jackson School Outstanding Educator Award
- 2018 Frye Memorial Award for Geological CO2 Sequestration Atlas
As PI/co-PI on 16 CCS grants totaling $70M+, he collaborates with industry stakeholders and academic teams. Current initiatives involve GoMCarb (Offshore Gulf of Mexico CCS) and high-resolution seismic data collection.
