Timothy J. Nice is an Associate Professor in the Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU). His research focuses on host-microbe interactions in the intestine, particularly how viruses and bacteria interact with host genes and immune responses to influence infection outcomes. The Nice Lab investigates viral and bacterial genes critical for pathogen survival, as well as how microbiota composition modulates anti-microbial immunity.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Molecular and Cellular Biology, University of California, Berkeley (2009)
- B.S. in Genetics, Cell Biology, and Development, University of Minnesota-Twin Cities (2003)
Research Interests:
- Host-microbe interactions in the gut
- Viral and bacterial gene determinants of infection outcomes
- Microbiota-epithelial cell cross-talk in immunity
- Interferon lambda signaling in intestinal defense
Recent Research Trends: Recent work emphasizes norovirus pathogenesis, interferon lambda-mediated antiviral protection, and the role of protists in modulating immune responses. Studies frequently integrate organoid models and genetically engineered mice to explore mechanisms at the host-microbe interface.
Laboratory: The Nice Lab operates within OHSU's Molecular Microbiology and Immunology department, focusing on translational studies linking basic immunology to infectious disease outcomes.
