Timothy Gillespie is a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Queensland's School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. His research focuses on terahertz imaging technologies, with applications in biomedical engineering, precision agriculture, and material characterization. He holds a Master of Science and Technology from the University of New South Wales and is actively involved in supervising graduate research.
Key research interests include terahertz laser feedback interferometry for hydration sensing in plants and skin pathology detection. His work bridges optical engineering and applied physics, with contributions to non-destructive testing and coherent imaging systems. Recent projects involve developing terahertz virtual biopsy techniques for early melanoma detection and imaging genetic variations in plant cells.
Publications span topics like quantum cascade laser dynamics, sub-surface damage detection in materials, and agricultural applications of terahertz sensing. He is currently leading a funded project (2025-2026) on terahertz virtual skin biopsy technology through Australia's Economic Accelerator Ignite Grants.
