Dr. Timothy Gallagher is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at Kent State University within the College of Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on understanding terrestrial environments through biogeochemical and sedimentological approaches, particularly studying modern soils and paleosols to decode Earth's climate history and predict future responses to anthropogenic climate change.
- Ph.D. and M.S. in Geology from University of Michigan
- B. Phil. and B.A. in Geology from University of Pittsburgh
His work combines field observations with laboratory experiments, utilizing multi-proxy analyses to investigate:
- Climate change impacts on soil systems
- Paleosol carbonate and organic matter geochemistry
- Methane oxidation vs soil respiration dynamics
- Magnetic enhancement mechanisms in sediments
- Calcite dissolution effects on climate proxies
- Redox chemistry in ancient lake systems
Recent publications highlight his contributions to Miocene-Pliocene aridity studies, Permian-Triassic CO2 analysis, and Holocene seasonal climate proxies. His research has appeared in journals like Geology, Geophysical Research Letters, and Paleoceanography and Paleoclimatology.
