Dr. Anderson's research centers on the historical production of cultural landscapes, with a focus on settlement geography in the United States and Germanic diasporas in Europe and North America. He investigates how regional identities and spatial forms emerged through land policies, migration, and cultural practices, particularly during the early National period in Ohio and under Austro-Hungarian colonization in the Romanian Banat. His work bridges geography, history, and cultural studies.
His recent publications reflect a consistent engagement with themes of spatial organization, land division, and cultural identity. He has explored the Public Land Survey System, Pennsylvania-German barns, and the grid villages of the Danube Swabians, demonstrating a deep interest in how political and economic systems shape physical landscapes. His scholarship appears in leading journals such as the Journal of Historical Geography and Historical Geography, as well as in university press publications.
