Timothy D. Leonard is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the rank of Instructor in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at the University of Chicago. His research focuses on the languages, religions, and histories of cuneiform cultures in the ancient Middle East, with a specialization in the Hittite civilization of Anatolia (modern Türkiye). He teaches AANL 10101-10103: Elementary Hittite.
His work examines the Hittite reception of Hurrian and Syro-Mesopotamian cultural influences, particularly in religious festivals, magical practices, and the syncretism of deities like Ištar-Šavoška. He has contributed to projects analyzing Hittite paleography, famine documentation, and climate change in Late Bronze Age Anatolia. His postdoctoral research centers on the diverse manifestations of Ištar-Šavoška in Hittite sources, exploring how this Mesopotamian deity became integrated into Anatolian religious systems.
Leonard’s interdisciplinary approach illuminates the complex interplay of Hurrian, Syrian, Mesopotamian, and Anatolian cultural elements in Hittite religious practices. His studies advance understanding of intercultural religious transmission and the socio-historical context of ancient Anatolia.
