Timothy D. Baird is an Associate Professor of Geography at Virginia Tech’s College of Natural Resources and Environment, serving as Faculty Principal of the Creativity and Innovation District (CID) Living-Learning Community and Senior Fellow at the Institute for Creativity, Arts, and Technology. His research bridges human-environment interactions, focusing on pastoralist communities in Tanzania, mobile phone impacts on social networks, and indoor geography in educational spaces. He earned his PhD in Geography and has held grants from NSF, Steelcase, and the National Geographic Society.
Research interests include sustainability, resilience studies, and technology’s role in development. Notable projects include studying Maasai women’s empowerment via mobile phones and examining space-place dynamics in active learning environments using lidar and sensor technologies. He teaches courses like Seeking Sustainability and pioneered the Pink Time assignment promoting student autonomy. Awards include the XCaliber Award (2018) and Excellence in Teaching (2022).
Grants total over $400k, focusing on human-environment geographies and educational innovation. His CID residence integrates teaching and research, fostering community through weekly dinners and guest lectures. Current projects involve digital twins, indoor human movement analysis, and Tanzanian gender studies.
