Timothy Cheek is a Professor of History and holds the Louis Cha Chair in Chinese Research at the University of British Columbia (UBC). He is also Co-Director of the Centre for Chinese Research at the Institute of Asian Research. His academic career at UBC spans over two decades, focusing on 20th-century Chinese history, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), and the role of intellectuals in public life. He holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University (1986), an M.A. from the University of Virginia (1980), and a B.A. from the Australian National University (1978).
Research Interests: Cheek’s work examines the CCP’s historical evolution, Mao Zedong’s writings, and contemporary Chinese intellectual debates. His recent projects include a collaborative translation initiative, “Revisiting the Revolution,” and a study on Chinese statecraft from the Ming dynasty to modern times. He is also engaged in SSHRC-funded research on public intellectuals in China today.
Teaching: Courses include “The Making of Modern China,” “Mao & Memory,” and “Intellectuals and Public Life in Eastern Asia.” Office hours are Wednesdays 3:00–5:00 PM at Choi 276, UBC.
Awards: 2023 Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (RSC) in the Academy of Arts and Humanities.
Grants & Collaborations: Active in cross-Canadian academic partnerships, including collaborative translations with York University and the University of Montreal.
