Timothy Becker, MD is a child and adolescent psychiatry fellow and post-doctoral research fellow at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons and the New York State Psychiatric Institute, Department of Psychiatry. As an Associate Scholar with the University of Pennsylvania's Center for Global Health, he conducts cross-cultural research on stigma in mental health and HIV/AIDS across Botswana, Chile, and the United States, with clinical collaborations extending to Liberia and Grenada.
His educational trajectory includes:
- Medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania with research blocks in Botswana focusing on head trauma databases and mental illness stigma
- Psychiatry residency at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai through the global mental health track
- Ongoing specialization in child and adolescent psychiatry at Columbia University
Becker's research centers on culturally adapted stigma interventions using the "What Matters Most" framework, with particular emphasis on intersectional stigma among women living with HIV, adolescents with mental illness, and immigrant populations. His methodological approach integrates qualitative analysis with pragmatic clinical trials to develop context-specific measurement tools and behavioral interventions. Current projects address structural vulnerability in Botswana, culturally shaped gossip mechanisms in HIV stigma, and immigration impacts on Chinese communities in the US.
Analysis of his publication portfolio reveals a cohesive research program spanning psychiatric rehabilitation, public health policy, and clinical HIV care, with consistent application of mixed-methods designs across low-resource settings. The work demonstrates increasing methodological sophistication from initial qualitative explorations to current intervention trials, while maintaining focus on culturally salient aspects of stigma resistance.
Becker collaborates extensively with multi-national research teams across institutional boundaries, including partnerships with the New York State Psychiatric Institute, Columbia University, and international sites in Southern Africa and Latin America. His clinical work integrates global mental health perspectives into domestic US settings through community-based interventions for vulnerable populations.
