Timothy Barnum is an Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Union College. His research focuses on molecular spectroscopy, quantum chemistry, and the study of reactive intermediates in combustion and interstellar medium systems. He leads the Barnum Research Group, which employs high-resolution rotational spectroscopy and computational methods to investigate molecular structures and dynamics.
Barnum holds a B.A. from Drew University and a Ph.D. from MIT, followed by postdoctoral research at MIT. He teaches courses including Introductory Chemistry, Kinetics and Thermodynamics, and Quantum Chemistry.
His research interests include Rydberg states, vibrational autoionization, and collaborations with the GOTHAM project to identify organic molecules in space. Recent funding includes a $55,000 ACS Petroleum Research Fund grant (2023-2025) for studying reactive intermediates in combustion systems.
Notable achievements include the development of novel spectroscopic techniques and contributions to understanding molecular dynamics in extreme environments. His work bridges experimental and computational approaches, offering students hands-on experience in instrument design, data analysis, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
