Timo Gerres

Timo Gerres is a Visiting Researcher at the Instituto de Investigación Tecnológica (IIT) of Universidad Pontificia Comillas, specializing in Distributed Resources, Networks and Flexibility. He joined the institution in October 2023 and is actively engaged in research on energy economics, industrial decarbonization, hydrogen, renewable energy integration, energy sector regulation, and environmental policy instruments.

Dr. Gerres was born in Hamm, Germany in 1989. He received his B.Sc. in Business Engineering from Universität Paderborn (DE) in 2011. After gaining initial experience in the energy sector as a commercial analyst for EuroDev (NL), he obtained his M.Sc. in Systems Engineering, Policy Analysis & Management from TU Delft (NL) in 2014. He then worked for 2.5 years as a project director for the transmission system operator TenneT in Germany. In April 2017, he joined the Instituto de Investigación Tecnológica of Universidad Pontificia Comillas as a Predoctoral Researcher. He defended his doctoral thesis in January 2022 titled 'Understanding the implications of industrial decarbonisation: a multidisciplinary approach towards the transition of the basic materials industry and its impact on our energy systems.'

Dr. Gerres is a member of the Chair of Hydrogen Studies, and his current research spans across energy economics, industrial decarbonization strategies, hydrogen technologies, renewable energy integration challenges, energy sector regulation, and environmental policy instruments. His publications reveal a strong focus on industrial decarbonization pathways, with particular attention to the steel sector, carbon contracts for differences, product carbon requirements, and hydrogen's role in the energy transition. His work combines technical, economic, and regulatory perspectives to develop comprehensive solutions for decarbonizing energy-intensive industries.

Dr. Gerres has served as a scientific advisor for the 18th Conference on Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems and is a member of the Advisory Council of the UNIDO Working Group 2 on Low-carbon standards since January 2022. His consulting work includes projects for the European Commission, European Parliament, Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism of Spain, and various international energy companies, demonstrating his expertise's relevance to policy-making and industry practice.
