Dr. Tim Whitton is a post-doctoral marine ecologist at the School of Ocean Sciences, Bangor University. His research focuses on how human activities (fishing, marine renewable energy, manmade structures) influence species distributions, behavior, and ecological interactions in marine environments. He collaborates with the fishing sector and projects like SEACAMS2 and U-boat Project Wales to assess environmental impacts of marine technologies and shipwrecks.
- Current Research: Investigating bottom fishing's effects on blue carbon sequestration via experimental sampling aboard the RV Prince Madog.
- Education:
- PhD (2013): Processes controlling cockle abundance and distribution
- MSc (2010): Marine Environmental Protection
- BSc (2008): Marine Biology
Research Themes include Marine Ecology, Blue Carbon, Fishing, and Renewable Energy. His work employs laboratory/field experiments and fisheries acoustics to study benthic-pelagic systems and tidal energy device interactions.
Scientific Awards:
- Award Program for ASL's AZFP
- Most Groundbreaking Research to Solve an Industry Problem (2021)
- UK Acoustics Network Travel Grant (2019)
Public Engagement includes workshops on shipwreck ecology for recreational divers and participation in international working groups like ICES WGFAST to advance acoustic research methodologies.
