Tim Vyner is Professor of Illustration at Bath School of Design, Bath Spa University, where he has been teaching since 2003, progressing from Associate Senior Lecturer to his current professorship. His academic career spans over two decades of integrating professional illustration practice with teaching, maintaining strong connections between classroom instruction and real-world application through his extensive international projects and exhibitions.
His educational background includes an MA in Illustration from the Royal College of Art (1986-1988) and a BA (Hons) in Graphic Design from Camberwell School of Arts (1982-1985), which provided the foundation for his distinctive approach to visual storytelling and reportage illustration.

Professor Vyner's research focuses on practice-based exploration of reportage illustration as visual journalism, particularly examining how on-location drawing can change perceptions of global sporting events and influence their reporting. His work investigates the performative nature of drawing in dynamic contexts, with an emphasis on connecting audiences meaningfully 'in the moment' through shared experiences. This research manifests through extensive documentation of major international events including two Olympic Games and multiple World Cups, where he captures the atmosphere and human stories beyond conventional media coverage.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a consistent focus on using illustration as a tool for social commentary and cultural documentation, with particular attention to sporting events as cultural phenomena. His work demonstrates increasing integration of technology with traditional drawing practices, exploring how digital tools expand the possibilities for real-time visual reporting while maintaining the authenticity of hand-drawn documentation. The geographic scope of his projects has expanded from local UK contexts to truly global coverage across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas.
Professor Vyner's significant recognition includes the prestigious RCA/Doug Patterson Mount Athos Scholarship (2013), election as Associate of the Royal Watercolour Society (2008), and multiple awards from the V&A Illustration Awards and Royal Watercolour Society. His work has been exhibited internationally and featured in major publications including The Times and The Telegraph.

His teaching extends beyond the classroom through numerous visiting lectureships worldwide and collaborative projects that provide students with real-world experience, such as the Bath Abbey Footprint Project where he worked with students on exhibition panels. His commitment to mentorship is evident in his long-standing involvement with student projects and community initiatives that bridge academic work with social impact.
Professor Vyner works within a dynamic practice environment that includes both traditional studio spaces and on-location drawing contexts. His current projects involve collaboration with the Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution on digital applications, partnership with Street Child United on global advocacy projects, and ongoing documentation of cultural events worldwide. His practice demonstrates how illustration functions as both academic research and professional practice, with his studio serving as a laboratory for testing new approaches to visual storytelling in real-time contexts.
