Gary Embury is a Senior Lecturer in Illustration at the University of the West of England, Faculty of Arts, Creative Industries, and Education. An award-winning illustrator and editor, he serves as Editor-in-Chief of Reportager.org—an online journal for reportage drawing—and co-founded the Topolski Studio Chronicle Residency Programme. He curated the International Reportager Drawing Award and co-authored a book on reportage and documentary drawing published by Bloomsbury.
His research centers on reportage drawing, documentary illustration, and artistic practices in visual storytelling. He explores intersections of art, journalism, and social observation through fieldwork and collaborative projects.
Embury actively engages in academic discourse, chairing forums (e.g., 'Witness, Reportage and Documentary' at Falmouth University) and participating in symposia (e.g., RCA's 'Reportage Drawing at the End of the World'). His work was exhibited at Saatchi Gallery's 'The Healing Arts' (2022).
Current initiatives include:
