Tim Vartanian, MD, PhD is a Professor of Neuroscience at the Brain and Mind Research Institute and Professor of Neurology in the Department of Neurology and Neuroscience at Weill Cornell Medical College. He serves as the Director of the Judith Jaffe Multiple Sclerosis Center at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he provides specialized clinical care for patients with multiple sclerosis and related neuroimmunological disorders.
Dr. Vartanian received his medical degree from the Pritzker School of Medicine at the University of Chicago and his PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Chicago. His postgraduate training included internships, residencies, and research fellowships at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, Beth Israel Hospital, and Harvard Medical School. Previously, he was chief of the Division of Demyelinating Diseases at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and a faculty member at Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Vartanian's research focuses on neural regeneration, particularly on mechanisms of central nervous system remyelination, novel pathways of axonal degeneration and regeneration, and immune-mediated injury to myelin and axons in multiple sclerosis. His work has established groundbreaking connections between gut microbiome, specifically Clostridium perfringens epsilon toxin, and multiple sclerosis pathogenesis. He has pioneered research on how racial and ethnic differences affect MS presentation and immune responses, with particular attention to Black and Latinx populations. His laboratory investigates the complex interactions between the immune and nervous systems, with emphasis on how gut-derived bacterial toxins may overcome CNS immune privilege and trigger neuroinflammation.
Analysis of Dr. Vartanian's recent publications reveals a strong focus on the intersection of microbiome science and neuroimmunology in multiple sclerosis. His work has increasingly emphasized health disparities in MS, particularly examining how Black and Hispanic patients experience different disease manifestations and immune responses. A significant thread throughout his recent work involves Clostridium perfringens epsilon toxin and its role in compromising the blood-brain barrier, killing lymphocytes, and potentially triggering MS in susceptible individuals. His research also incorporates advanced imaging techniques to study myelin water fraction and GABAergic receptor expression in MS patients.

Dr. Vartanian has secured significant research funding from major organizations including the National Institutes of Health (NIH), specifically the National Institute of Allergy & Infectious Diseases and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. His current projects include "Immune Privilege, CNS Autoimmunity, and Clostridium perfringens Epsilon Toxin" (NIH/NIAID), "Harboring the Initial Trigger of Multiple Sclerosis" (National MS Society), and "Immunology of advancing disease among minorities with Multiple Sclerosis." He has served on grant review committees for the NIH, National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Congressionally Directed Medical Research through the Department of Defense, and The Wellcome Trust.
Dr. Vartanian leads research teams at the Judith Jaffe Multiple Sclerosis Center, where his laboratory investigates the connections between gut microbiome and central nervous system autoimmunity. His team employs a multidisciplinary approach combining microbiology, immunology, neurology, and advanced imaging techniques to understand MS pathogenesis. The lab has developed innovative models, including humanized zebrafish systems, to study blood-brain barrier disruption by bacterial toxins. Dr. Vartanian also collaborates with industry partners including Astoria Biologica, Inc. and Sanofi S.A., where he serves as a consultant, and maintains ownership and proprietary interests in Astoria Biologica.
