Tim Tolker-Nielsen is a Professor of Medical Molecular Microbiology at the Department of Immunology and Microbiology, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. He has held this position since 2012 and has established himself as a leading researcher in bacterial biofilms and antibiotic resistance mechanisms.
His educational background includes:
- Master of Science in Chemical Engineering from the Technical University of Denmark
- PhD in Molecular Microbiology from the Technical University of Denmark
- DMSc from the University of Copenhagen
Professor Tolker-Nielsen's research focuses on chronic bacterial infections, antibiotic resistance mechanisms, and the molecular processes behind microbial biofilm formation and persistence. His work particularly examines c-di-GMP signaling pathways and identifies potential drug candidates that can disrupt biofilm formation and overcome antimicrobial resistance. His research has significant clinical implications for developing new therapeutic approaches against persistent bacterial infections, especially those involving Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus.
His extensive publication record demonstrates a consistent focus on biofilm-related research, with particular emphasis on molecular signaling pathways, biofilm eradication strategies, and novel anti-biofilm compounds. His work spans fundamental biofilm biology to translational applications in infection treatment.
With over 177 peer-reviewed articles, 27,300 citations, and an H-index of 78, Professor Tolker-Nielsen has established himself as a leading researcher in medical molecular microbiology. His work has resulted in 4 patent applications and 13 book chapters, reflecting both academic and translational impact.
Professor Tolker-Nielsen teaches microbiology to undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Copenhagen. His previous academic positions include Associate Professor at the Department of Systems Biology, Technical University of Denmark (2001-2008) and Associate Professor at the Department of International Health, Immunology and Microbiology, University of Copenhagen (2008-2012).
His research group maintains active collaborations with clinicians and scientists across disciplines to advance the understanding and treatment of biofilm-associated infections, which represent a major clinical challenge in modern medicine.
