Tim Sass is a Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Economics at Georgia State University (GSU), affiliated with the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies. He serves as the faculty director of the Metro Atlanta Policy Lab for Education (MAPLE) within the Georgia Policy Labs and holds the W.J. Usery Chair of the American Workplace. His research focuses on the economics of education, with specializations in teacher labor supply, teacher quality measurement, and school choice policies. Sass holds a Ph.D. and M.A. from the University of Washington and an A.B. from the University of California-Davis.
His research has been supported by grants from the U.S. Department of Education, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and others. He has consulted for school systems in major cities including New York City, Washington, D.C., and Charlotte, NC, as well as state education agencies in Florida and New York. Sass is a senior researcher at the Center for Analysis of Longitudinal Data in Education Research (CALDER) and an associate editor of the Journal of Human Resources.
Key research themes include the impact of teacher incentives, the efficacy of virtual learning during the pandemic, and systemic issues in K-12 education. His recent work addresses post-pandemic academic recovery strategies, remote instruction effectiveness, and equitable access to high-quality teachers. Sass has contributed to high-impact journals such as the Quarterly Journal of Economics and Journal of Public Economics.
