Tim Oberlander is a Professor in Pediatrics and Population & Public Health at the University of British Columbia. He is a member of the Developmental Foundations of Psychopathology (DFP) group and leads the 3T MR Imaging facility at BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute (CFRI). His research focuses on understanding how prenatal exposure to maternal mental illness and psychotropic medications, particularly SSRIs, influence child development, stress regulation, and emotional well-being. He explores pathways for developmental resilience and risk, leveraging advanced neuroimaging techniques to study early brain development.
Key research areas include: (1) developmental impacts of prenatal SSRI exposure and maternal mood disorders on neurobehavioral outcomes; (2) pharmacoepidemiological studies linking antenatal medication use to child cognition and mood; and (3) improving pain assessment in children with developmental disabilities. His work bridges biobehavioral, pharmacologic, and genetic factors, with a focus on epigenetic mechanisms like serotonin transporter gene (SLC6A4) methylation.
Tim’s findings aim to inform clinical interventions that mitigate developmental risks and enhance resilience. He collaborates with the Designing for People Research Network in Vancouver to advance translational research in child health.
