Dr. Tim O'Connell is an Associate Professor in the Department of Natural Resource Ecology & Management at Oklahoma State University (OSU), affiliated with the Ferguson College of Agriculture. He leads the O'Connell Lab, focusing on wildlife ecology, particularly avian conservation and landscape ecology. His work addresses human impacts on wildlife populations, including habitat fragmentation, climate change, and mortality from human infrastructure.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Ecology, Pennsylvania State University (1999)
- M.A. in Biology, College of William & Mary (1992)
- B.S. in Natural Resources Management, Cornell University (1989)
Research Interests: Dr. O'Connell's research integrates landscape ecology principles to conserve biodiversity, emphasizing bird and mammal distribution, habitat selection, and anthropogenic threats. Key areas include:
- Ornithology and avian migration patterns
- Climate change effects on wildlife populations
- Avian mortality from window collisions
- Ecological indicators like the Bird Community Index
His recent articles explore decoupling of bird migration from environmental cues, range shifts in woodpeckers, and domestic cat impacts on wildlife. Collaborations include the Loss Lab (OSU) and global studies on urbanization effects.
Professional Roles:
- President of the Wilson Ornithological Society
- Past-President of Oklahoma Ornithological Society
- Leadership in Audubon Society and bird clubs
Dr. O'Connell advises students on avian ecology projects and teaches courses in wildlife management and ornithology. His lab emphasizes undergraduate research and community outreach, aligning with OSU's Land Grant mission.
