Dr. Tim Kooijmans is a Lecturer in Finance at RMIT University's School of Economics Finance and Marketing, based at the City Campus. He holds a Master's in Economic History from the University of Amsterdam and a PhD in Finance from Monash University (2020). His research focuses on corporate finance, financial intermediation, and the historical impact of financial systems, particularly exploring how financial instruments shaped colonial economies like the Dutch Atlantic slave trade. In 2024, he secured an €800,000 grant from the Dutch research council for a project analyzing plantation mortgage-backed securities in Surinam.
He actively presents at conferences such as the American Finance Association (AFA) and publishes in journals like the Journal of Economic History. He is open to supervising Masters and PhD students, including a current project on cashless societies in Indonesia. His work bridges historical analysis with modern financial frameworks, emphasizing the interplay between legal risks, reputation, and financial innovation.
