Tim Huijgen is an Assistant Professor of Social Studies Education at the University of Groningen, affiliated with the Department of Teacher Education within the Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences. His research focuses on citizenship education, AR/VR integration in teaching, teacher professional development, and historical contextualization. Huijgen holds a PhD in History and Education and has extensive experience as a secondary school history teacher and textbook author.
Education: B.A. and M.A. in History from the University of Groningen (2004–2009), and a PhD in Educational Sciences (2012–2016). He also completed the University Teaching Qualification (2012–2013) and leadership programs in academic and inclusive leadership.
Research Interests: Combining educational theory with practice, particularly in history and social studies education. Key areas include historical empathy, teacher training, and innovative pedagogical approaches like AR/VR. He chairs the Gamma Cluster (covering history, geography, etc.) and collaborates with organizations like the Interuniversity Center for Educational Research (ICO).
Scientific Contributions: Over 120 publications, including peer-reviewed articles on historical contextualization, teacher training, and educational technology. His work bridges classroom practice and academic research, with a focus on fostering critical thinking and ethical reasoning in students.
Awards: Teacher of the Year (Department for Teacher Education), Incentive Fund for Interdisciplinary Projects, and multiple grants. He serves on editorial boards for HERJ and Dimensies, and is a jury member for the Dutch History Teacher of the Year award.
Professional Roles: Coordinates teacher education programs, oversees nascholing (continuing education) for history teachers, and advises on curriculum development. Active in national and international educational networks, including the Comenius Network and HEIRNET.
