Dr. Hanneke Tuithof is an Assistant Professor in Cultural History at Utrecht University's Department of History and Art History within the Faculty of Humanities. She also serves as a senior lecturer for two days a week at Utrecht University of Applied Sciences in the lectorate on curriculum issues in fundamental education. Her work bridges academic research and practical teacher education, with significant contributions to history education curriculum development and the Canon of the Netherlands.
Her research focuses on the pedagogical content knowledge development of history and humanities teachers, particularly examining how experienced teachers make curricular choices and how pre-service teachers develop their professional knowledge. She investigates the role of historical canons in education and explores collaborative approaches between humanities and social science subjects. Her work extends to international contexts including Bonaire, Aruba, and Flanders, examining multicultural and multilingual approaches to history education.
Tuithof's recent publications reveal a strong trend toward practical applications of teacher knowledge development, with increasing attention to Caribbean contexts and decolonial perspectives. Her work consistently addresses the relationship between historical content knowledge, pedagogical approaches, and curriculum design, with particular emphasis on how teachers navigate complex historical narratives and diverse classroom settings.
She actively supervises master's theses in the educational master's program in history and coordinates the two-year educational master's program. Tuithof organizes professional development programs for experienced history teachers through the website www.uu.nl/historieendidactiek and serves as co-host of the 'Tussenuur' podcast for history teachers.
Her institutional involvement includes membership on the VGN Teacher Training Committee since 2000, the jury for history teacher of the year organized by the Rijksmuseum, the advisory board of the Germany Institute Amsterdam (chair since 2023), and the editorial board of the online magazine Dimensies. She was a member of the Canon of the Netherlands Recalibration Committee (2019-2020) and the Bussemaker Committee on knowledge of the former Dutch East Indies (2021-2023).
