Dr. Tim Hofmann serves as a Research Associate under Professorship Gess at the Department of Linguistics and Literature within the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Basel. His office is located at Nadelberg 4, 4051 Basel, Switzerland.
The Department of Linguistics and Literature focuses on the scientific study of language as the primary sign system of human interaction, cultural creation, and thought processes. The department examines language in its various social, media, and historical manifestations, maintaining close connections with social, media, and cognitive sciences.
Research within the department addresses fundamental linguistic questions including language standardization (such as whether 'Fahrrad' or 'Velo' is acceptable in Standard German), the status of grammatical cases like the genitive, group-specific language usage patterns, cognitive processing of language, and language acquisition in both children and adults. These research areas form the foundation for understanding linguistic communication in social and media contexts and its cognitive basis.
As part of the German Philology program (German Studies), the department studies the language and culture of the entire German-speaking world, with particular emphasis on linguistic communication analysis and cognitive foundations of language use.
