Prof. Dr. Tim Freytag is a Professor of Human Geography at the Institute of Environmental Social Sciences and Geography, Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg, where he has held a professorship since April 2010. Previously, he was Professor of Cultural Geography at Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel (2009-2010) and Research Associate at Ruprecht-Karls-University Heidelberg (1997-2009). He holds leadership positions including Chairman of the France Center at the University of Freiburg, First Chairman of the Society for Geography and Ethnology in Freiburg, and Speaker of the Educational Geography working group of the German Society for Geography.
His research focuses on tourism and mobility research (particularly European city tourism), urban research and sustainable urban development, and social and educational geography. His work examines spatial dimensions of tourism, mobility patterns in urban contexts, and the relationship between education and geographical spaces. Through field exercises in Northern and southwestern Germany, France (Strasbourg, Paris, Montpellier and Perpignan), he emphasizes experiential learning in geographical education.
Prof. Freytag serves as co-editor of the Geographical Journal and the open access journal Via. Tourism Review. His academic service includes membership on the Scientific Advisory Board of the Association for Geography at German-speaking Universities and Research Institutions (VGDH) and the board of the Tourism Research working group of the German Society for Geography.
