Professor Tim Dafforn is a Professor of Biotechnology at the University of Birmingham's School of Biosciences, serving as Knowledge Exchange Lead and contributing to national science policy. His expertise spans biophysical spectroscopy and synthetic biology, with a focus on developing novel biomolecular technologies like SMALPs and RTF-EXPAR diagnostics. He holds roles including Chief Scientific Advisor to the UK Department of Business Energy and Industrial Strategy, Chair of the Institute of Engineering Technology's Innovation Panel, and membership in UK Engineering Biology Leadership Council and Ministry of Defence committees.
Education: BSc (Hons) Biochemistry (Cardiff University) and PhD in Protein Engineering (Bristol University). Research emphasizes nanotechnology-enhanced biomolecule exploitation, including membrane protein purification and diagnostics commercialization. He has founded two companies and contributed to policy frameworks for science exploitation and entrepreneurship education.
