Tim Buchen is an Assistant Professor at the Taube Department of Jewish Studies at the University of Wrocław, holding the Zofia and Tadeusz Heimrath Chair for the History of Jews in Breslau and Silesia. His research focuses on 19th-20th century Central/Eastern Europe, specializing in empire dissolution, collective violence, migration, nationalism, and minority histories. He holds a PhD from Technical University Berlin, awarded summa cum laude and multiple prestigious awards including the Immanuel Kant Prize.
- Educated at Humboldt University Berlin (History/German Literature) and Free University Berlin (East European Studies)
- Prior roles: Junior Professor at TU Dresden (2017-2023), Lecturer at University of Edinburgh (2015-2017), Assistant Professor at European University Viadrina and Bamberg University
Current research project explores Jewish elites in Breslau (1848-1933), analyzing their rise to prominence through education, career strategies, and network-building using prosopographical methods. His work bridges socio-historical and cultural approaches to understand how Jewish communities navigated Prussian systems during Weimar Republic transitions.
