Prof Tim Baker is Professor of Tropical Ecology and Conservation at the University of Leeds' School of Geography within the Faculty of Environment, focusing on tropical forest dynamics, peatland conservation, and evolutionary ecology.
His academic background includes a PhD from the University of Aberdeen's Department of Plant and Soil Science and an MA from St Catharine's College, University of Cambridge.
Research Interests:
- Conservation of tropical peatland landscapes through sustainable bio-business models like aguaje palm harvesting, with fieldwork across Amazonia
- Resilience of intact tropical forests to climate change, analyzing carbon sink dynamics and drought impacts through long-term plot networks
- Evolutionary drivers of tropical forest diversity, linking life-history strategies to ecosystem function and conservation outcomes
Prof Baker leads major projects including Carbon Storage in Amazonian Peatlands and MonANPeru, securing $9.1M from the Green Climate Fund for Peru's Yaguas National Park. He advises PhD researchers like Viviana Ceccarelli and co-develops ForestPlots.net—a global forest monitoring initiative adopted in national UNFCCC policies.
