Tilman Schwarze is a Lecturer in Criminology at the University of Glasgow's School of Social & Political Sciences, where he also serves as a Research Associate. He holds a PhD in International Relations from the University of St Andrews. His research focuses on urban sociology, territorial stigmatization, racial economy, and the criminalization of drill music in the UK. He teaches qualitative research methods and introductory criminology at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Key research areas include community development in gang-affected areas on Chicago's South Side, socio-spatial theory, and media representation of crime. Schwarze has published widely in urban studies and criminology, including works on Henri Lefebvre's spatial theory and the intersection of urban development with cultural and political processes. His 2023 book Space, Urban Politics, and Everyday Life: Henri Lefebvre and the U.S. City explores Lefebvre’s theories through American urban contexts.
Recent publications examine topics such as the Obama Presidential Center’s impact on Chicago’s South Side, YouTube’s role in drill music criminalization, and newspaper crime mapping’s effects on territorial stigma. His work often critiques neoliberal urban governance and post-industrial urban dynamics.
Teaching focuses include qualitative methodologies and criminological theory. Advising includes supervision of Stephanie Love’s thesis on online dating intrusions. Schwarze contributes to interdisciplinary research groups like Criminology at Glasgow and collaborates globally on urban studies projects.
