Tilman Sauer

Professor Tilman Sauer holds a position in the Institute of Mathematics at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, where he specializes in the history of mathematics and natural sciences. His work bridges the historical development of mathematical concepts with their physical applications, particularly focusing on the interplay between mathematics and physics throughout scientific history.

Dr. Sauer's research interests center on the historical development of mathematical physics, with special emphasis on caustics and their mathematical treatment across centuries. His current DFG-funded project "Focussing between Mathematics and Physics – A Longterm History of Caustics" examines how mathematical concepts evolved in response to physical phenomena. He has particular expertise in Einstein's work and the historical context of modern physics.

As an active academic, Professor Sauer organizes seminars including the 26th Rhenish-Westphalian Seminar on the History and Philosophy of Mathematics and contributes to the Colloquium for History and Philosophy of Science. His teaching includes advanced seminars on the history of mathematics and natural sciences, reflecting his dual background in theoretical physics and history of science.

Professor Sauer maintains a strong connection with the California Institute of Technology as a Visiting Associate in History, continuing his long-standing collaboration with the Einstein Papers Project where he previously served as Senior Scientific Editor and Visiting Editor.
