Dr. Tiffany E. Barber is an Assistant Professor of African American Art at the University of California-Los Angeles. Previously, she held positions as Assistant Professor of Africana Studies and Art History at the University of Delaware and served as curator-in-residence at the Delaware Contemporary. She has completed fellowships at institutions including ArtTable, the Delaware Art Museum, the University of Virginia’s Carter G. Woodson Institute, and the Getty Research Institute.
Her research focuses on visual and performing artists of the Black world, with emphases on Afrofuturism, ethics of representation, and intersections of feminism, film, and fashion. Her book Undesirability and Her Sisters: Black Women’s Visual Work and the Ethics of Representation (NYU Press, 2025) explores these themes. She also curates multimedia exhibitions, such as a recent virtual project for Google Arts and Culture on Afrofuturism in crisis.
Dr. Barber’s work bridges academia and public engagement, appearing in top-tier journals, documentaries, and media outlets. Her 2022 Smithsonian award recognizes her scholarly contributions to portraiture and identity.
