Prof. Tiejun Zhang is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Khalifa University, Abu Dhabi, UAE, and Associate Dean of the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences. He is a Member of the Mohammed bin Rashid Academy of Scientists and Theme Leader of the Abu Dhabi Virtual Research Institute for Sustainability (Energy). His research focuses on thermal sciences, micro/nanotechnology, and sustainable energy-water-food systems.
- Education: Postdoctoral Research Associate at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (USA, 2011), PhD in Mechanical Engineering from City University of Hong Kong (2008), MSc in Thermal Energy Engineering from Southeast University (2004), BEng in Thermal Power Engineering from Southeast University (2001).
His research spans phase-change heat transfer, thermal radiation, microfluidics, micro-3D printing, and solar-powered desalination. Recent work includes AI-enabled subsurface energy extraction and smart light-heat-water management for food security. He has mentored over 60 PhD and MSc students.
- Scientific Awards: UAE National Research Foundation University-Industry Research Collaboration Award, Abu Dhabi Award for Research Excellence, US National Academy Arab-American Frontiers Fellowship, 1st Place in the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Water Award (2025), and recognition as a World’s Top 2% Scientist.
He has led major grants totaling ~US$15 million, including projects on nanostructured condensers and AI for clean energy. He is affiliated with the Food Security and Technology Center (FSTC) and serves as Associate Editor for the ASME Journal of Micro and Nano Science and Engineering.
