Tibor János Dunai is a Professor (W3) at the Institute of Geology & Mineralogy, University of Cologne, Germany, since 2010. He has held visiting professor roles at the Department of Geosciences, University of Edinburgh (2011–2015) and UCN Antofagasta, Chile (since 2019). He previously served as Reader and Senior Lecturer in Geomorphology at the University of Edinburgh (2005–2010) and as a tenured researcher at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (1996–2005). His research focuses on Earth surface processes, cosmogenic nuclides, and geomorphology.
- Education:
- Dr.rer.nat. habil., University of Münster (2003)
- Dr.sc., ETH-Zürich (1994)
- Diplom Mineraloge, University of Heidelberg (1989)
Dunai’s work spans noble gas geochemistry and cosmogenic nuclide applications to Earth surface sciences, with significant contributions to understanding landscape evolution and dryland dynamics. He has led major research initiatives such as the CRC 1211 'Earth – Evolution at the dry limit' (since 2016) and founded the Graduate School of Geosciences (GSGS) at the University of Cologne. His editorial roles include service for Earth and Planetary Science Letters (since 2013) and guest editorship for special issues on cosmogenic nuclides and Atacama Desert studies.
Key awards include the Albertus Magnus Teaching Award (2013) and the Leverhulme Fellowship (2007). He has organized international conferences and summer schools, including the CRONUS-EU summer school (2006) and the GSGS Summer School (2016). Dunai also directed the CologneAMS facility, a German center for accelerator mass spectrometry, since 2010, and held leadership roles in the Department of Geosciences (2015–2016) and the Institute of Geology and Mineralogy (2011–2013).
- Scientific Awards:
