Tiancheng Song is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. His research focuses on exploring novel 2D quantum materials and van der Waals heterostructures, with a particular emphasis on exotic 2D magnetism, superconductivity, and topological phenomena. Techniques employed include nanodevice fabrication, quantum transport, magneto-optics, and optical spectroscopy. He leads the Song Lab, which investigates moiré magnetism in twisted 2D magnets, spintronic devices using layered antiferromagnets, and the interplay between topology and superconductivity in materials like WTe₂. The lab utilizes advanced nanofabrication and home-built optical setups for spectroscopy and microscopy.
Notable research highlights include the discovery of moiré magnetism in CrI₃ and giant tunneling magnetoresistance in CrI₃-based junctions. His work bridges fundamental physics and device applications, aiming to engineer new quantum phases and spintronic technologies. The lab also explores pressure-tuning of magnetism and voltage-controlled magnetic states for next-generation memory and logic devices.
Dr. Song holds a PhD and has contributed to high-impact journals such as Science, Nature, and Nature Materials. His group actively seeks students and postdocs interested in 2D materials and quantum phenomena, with openings for experimental and theoretical research. The lab collaborates widely to advance understanding of 2D systems and their applications in quantum technologies.
