Tian Zheng is a Professor and Department Chair of Statistics at Columbia University's Faculty of Arts and Sciences. She holds affiliations with the Data Science Institute (DSI) and leads initiatives in interdisciplinary data science education. Zheng earned her Ph.D. in Statistics from Columbia in 2002 and a BSc from Tsinghua University in 1998.
Her research focuses on statistical machine learning, spatiotemporal modeling, and climate data science. Notable projects include the NSF-funded LEAP center for climate modeling and the Collaboratory program for data science curriculum development. Her work has been recognized with ASA's 2008 Outstanding Statistical Application Award, Mitchell Prize, and multiple fellowships.
- Education Leadership: Spearheaded Columbia's MS in Data Science program, DSI Scholars, and data ethics initiatives.
- Awards: 2017 Presidential Teaching Award and 2021 Lenfest Faculty Award for mentorship.
- Recent Projects: ClimSim dataset for hybrid climate modeling, Wasserstein distributional learning algorithms.
Her research bridges statistical theory, machine learning, and environmental science, with applications to climate systems and ecological networks.
