Tian Yu Cao is a Professor of Philosophy at Boston University, affiliated with the College of Arts & Sciences. His research focuses on the philosophy and history of science, particularly in physics, biology, and cognitive sciences, alongside epistemology, metaphysics, and social/political philosophy. He has held fellowships at prestigious institutions like All Souls College, Oxford, and the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. Cao earned his Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge.
His notable works include Conceptual Developments of Twentieth Century Field Theories and From Current Algebra to the Genesis of QCD. He has also authored books on Marxism and Chinese modernization. Cao’s research bridges historical and philosophical analyses of scientific theories, including quantum gravity and structural realism.
His articles explore topics like gauge theory, spontaneous symmetry breaking, and the philosophy of spacetime. He has received grants from NSF, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Neugebauer Fellowship. Cao has given over 100 invited lectures globally and teaches courses on philosophy of science, social philosophy, and the history of science.
