Tiago Fernandes is a Full Professor of Political Science and Public Policy at the University Institute of Lisbon (ISCTE), where he leads the Department of Political Science and Public Policy (ESPP). He directs the Varieties of Democracy Regional Center for Southern Europe and is an integrated researcher at CEI-Iscte - Center for International Studies. His work focuses on democracy dynamics, social movements, and civil society across Southern Europe, with expertise in transitional democracies and post-authoritarianism.
Previously, he spent 20 years at Nova University of Lisbon, holding roles such as Director of Graduate Studies and Head of the Political Science Department, alongside contributions to the Portuguese Institute of International Relations (IPRI). He holds a PhD from the European University Institute (Florence, 2009).
His research explores civil society mobilization against authoritarianism, postcolonial Africa, and the legacy of democratic transitions. He leads major projects funded by the Francisco Manuel dos Santos Foundation and the Swiss National Science Foundation, and collaborates with institutions like Princeton University and the Kellogg Institute.
Key awards include the Gulbenkian Foundation’s Best Social Science Article Prize and the Portuguese Political Science Association’s Best Dissertation Prize. His work bridges historical analysis with contemporary movements, emphasizing Southern Europe’s political trajectories.
